So you are interested in the success of the Finnish School – great! There are many reasons to support and many ways you can help. One of the best ways to support is to become involved. You probably know that this school is run by a handful of volunteers and its existence depends on their goodwill and hard work. Here are some ideas on how you can make a difference and help the school:

• Bring your children to Suomi Koulu regularly
• Become a board member, librarian, web master
• Become a teacher or teacher’s assistant
• Help organize our various events, such as fundraisers and our Christmas party
• Give us suggestions on how to improve
• Donate teaching materials to Suomi Koulu
• Donate to the Suomi Koulu operating budget
• Speak Finnish, read in Finnish and encourage your children to use Finnish
• Register and pay the tuition by the due date
• Sign up for classroom assistance (ask the teachers what is needed each time)
• Sign up for helping in the kitchen (coffee and cakes, clean-up)
•Sign up to help out in preparation, execution and clean up of the school events (what, when, where, how: check out the website, read the newsletter, ask the board members, teachers)
• Be diligent in coming to class every week on time and letting the teacher know if you cannot make it
• Participate in all school events with your family and friends
• Check out our teachers’ and librarian’s wishlist for items needed and let us know if you can help
• Ask for Finnish book donations for the school library
• Buy Finnish books, videos and CDs for our library
• Help our librarian keep the library in order
• Remember to return borrowed books, CDs and videos
• Ask friends and your work place for personal donations and business sponsorship
• Offer to pay for teaching materials, copies (teachers, newsletter)
• Take pictures of our events and share them
• Offer to write in our Suomikoululainen newsletter
• Send your digital photos of Suomi Koulu events and children to our newsletter editor
• Help out with the website, share your ideas with our webmaster
• Spread the word about our school, give our brochures and newsletters and ads for events
• Invite the interested to visit and experience the school day themselves
• Keep the teachers and the board up-to-date about your and your children’s changing or special needs and your family’s contact information
• Be direct with your feedback, ask for what you or your children need
• Offer your special skills and talent or interest in the classroom or for the board
• Volunteer for a position in the board
• Attend the meetings and contribute your ideas, thoughts and wishes
